Our Right to Grow Our Own Food.
On Oct. 8, 2012, a notice from the City of Orlando’s Code Enforcement stated that our “Front yard must be restored to its original configuration and ground covers restored.” Our edible garden had to go.
Thankfully we have been blessed because our community and the world has come to our side to fight for the Freedom to Grow our Food.
Help us to engage the community to plant more edible gardens.
I understand your position on this, though have an interesting suggestion, if you could make enough produce to not only sustain your family and have plenty to sell at a market would you consider a Portable Farms Aquaponics System with a greenhouse type enclosure for the backyard to maximize your produce growth? check out this website it might be interesting to you. Then with the extra cash from food sales you could save up for a new property with a size of land your looking for with the sale of the old one? Of course it would encourage compliance with City code regulations for the front yard. This way both the city and you would be happy and eventually you would have a new property with somethign you could better suit your interests.
I love what you are doing. I too live in FL and my front veggie beds are waiting for my seeds to arrive so I can plant them. My husband is afraid it might get me in trouble but I won't back down. Why should m next door neighbor be allowed to grow weeds (because they are lazy and won't cut the lawn)which I think looks awful, the house down the street be allowed to turn their front lawn into a rock garden (nothing like pure white everywhere you look) and another has so much shade that it's pure sand (apparently no one told them about shade loving plants). It will be interesting to see what happens. My city is currently voting on if upto 4 chickens are allowed in city limits for egg laying purposes. Final decision on that isn't until May. Don't back down it's your right!!!!
Congrats on your legal garden! I live in E. Orlando and have a bumper crop of delicious avocados and a few not so hot peppers I'd love to trade for some of your excess eggs and vegetables. It would be nice to meet you as well. I'm also starting a meetup group in Orlando dedicated to urban gardeners exchanging their crops and ideas, plus going in together on gardening supplies to get a better price. Please email me at lineberger@gmail.com if this sounds good to you.
Looks like our seeds and veg have done really well!
ReplyDeleteIt's also very ironic that the city is doing this due to the old agricultural roots it has.
